Rev. Within open wreath Alabama / at / Panama / Pacific / International / Exposition / San Francisco / 1915 / [scrollwork across]; on ribbons of bow, which ties wreath at bottom, microscopic W & H Co [Whitehead & Hoag Co.] on l. ribbon, Newark N.J. on r. ribbon; beaded border. HK-402 Bronze. 38mm. Arkansas produces more than 90 per cent of nation's bauxite, source of aluminum; hence, aluminum theme of medal and reason for production in that metal. In the mid 20th Century, apparently additional medals were struck from the original dies. There is some confusion as to how to determine an original 1915 struck example from a later example. The major diagnostic seems to be less marks in the field, and lack of a die chip on the reverse under the scroll under the 1915 date. The examples I have examined in encapsulted and graded holders reveal a lack of distinction by third party graders as to which are original and which are restrikes.
