Medal, 1871, AR, ABRAHAM LINCOLN PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION SILVER MEDAL (Records indicate that only 13 examples were struck in SIlver by U.S. Mint), 46mm. Julian CM-16 AR. NGC MS62, Cert# 2618170-003. Dies by William Barber. Obv. legend, Abraham Lincoln President of the United States, Barber (engraver’s name in small letters under Lincoln’s bust); Rv. March 4, 1861 curved legend, to April 15, 1865 (straight inscription), Emancipation Proclaimed Jan. 1, 1863. Medal Series of the U.S. Mint. J. Pollock 1871 Director. Records indicate that there were only 13 of these medals struck in silver. A very rare and attractive specimen, with bold reflectivity on both sides. This Medal was struck by the U.S. Mint as a Commemorative Medal for Lincoln, there were 363 pieces struck in bronze, and 13 struck in Silver. The U.S. Mint Director, James Pollock, whose name appears at the base of the reverse, thought to honor Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation -- he got to know Lincoln well when they were both Congressmen and both roomed at Mrs. Anne Spriggs' boardinghouse, where Pollock's better-refined anti-slavery ideas may have informed Lincoln's evolving opinion on the issue. After Pollock chose not to run again for Governor of Pennsylvania, Lincoln appointed him to be Director of the Mint. This medal is something of a thank you card to one of our most beloved Presidents. Lustrous and Rare. Cf. Tom French Americana Auctions, Capitola, CA 3/22/2006, Auction #21, Lot 77 where a silver about uncirculated example from the John Gingerich Collection was confirmed as being only 1 of only 13 silver struck by the U.S. Mint.
