Similar to the issued 1866 Shield nickel, but the reverse lacks rays, a change made to the circulating design the next year. Struck in copper with a plain edge. The golden-brown surfaces display ruby-red, forest-green, and orange hues when rotated beneath a light. Exactingly struck and minimally abraded. Encapsulated in an old green label holder.
