The under-heralded Amerigo Vespucci..of whom the name America derives--was controversial in Europe during the late 1400's and early 1500's. After mapping the coastline much farther south than Asia was known to extend, he surmised that it was not Asia at all but a new continent.. - another coin with a prtuguese explorer-Amerigo Vespucci--I love the Portuguese cross on the sails..
