Owner Comments:
Coin enthusiasts have the Pittman Act of 1918 to thank for the “Peace Dollar”. With a sufficient supply of silver dollars on hand and little or no public demand, we would not have the Peace Dollar today had it not been for the Pittman Act. Under the provisions of the law, the Mint was to issue a corresponding number of new silver dollars for older dollars that had been melted into bullion and sold. Accordingly, on December 21, 1921 minting of the Peace Dollar began with 1,006,473 1921 dated coins. Peace Dollars in 1921 were minted in high relief, but due to problems with excessive die breakage, the relief was lowered in 1922 making this semi-key date MS-62 1921 Peace Dollar a first-year/one-year die variety. Minting of the Peace Dollar stopped in 1928 and resumed in 1934 and 1935 as backing for “Silver Certificates”. In 1965, 316,076 Peace Dollars dated 1964 were minted at Denver to meet the needs of Nevada's casinos. However, due to the rising price of silver, production was stopped and all the coins dated 1964 have subsequently been melted.
