1921 50C Alabama 2x2 MS67 NGC. The state of Alabama joined the union in 1819 with its centennial celebration taking place in 1919. Both of these dates were incorporated into the design, despite the coining not being issued until 1921. This variety, with 2x2 in the right obverse field, was created in an effort to increase sales and fund-raising. According to legislation, profits from this issue were destined to support historical and monumental projects. Today, we must question whether these projects actually took place. This is only the sixth time that we have offered a Superb Gem MS67 example of this issue over the past dozen years. Both sides have pastel gray-golden toning with signs of deeper peripheral iridescence. Beneath the toning, the surfaces display exceptional satiny luster. We cannot imagine a finer example for the connoisseur. Population by both services combined: 6 in 67, none are finer with the exception of this beauty, Pop 1 NGC 67 STAR. Larry Shepherd Mar. 2009
