As I mentioned in the set description, it’s the dollar that was the start to this proof set. Plus having the largest denomination in the set I figured it was down hill the rest of the way.
My local coin dealer, Russ at Greater Milwaukee coin, knew I was looking for a proof Morgan dollar, a cheaper Morgan proof though, so he didn’t tell me when he bought this dollar and submitted for grading thinking it would grade PF63 and be a little beyond my budget. But the Morgan dollar came back a PF62, although this was not so good for Russ, it allowed me to buy a good looking proof Morgan dollar for my type set at a price I could afford at the time.
Yes there are some light hairlines from cleaning, but you would tend to believe it could have graded better due to the great eye appeal this coin has. Both the obverse and reverse are deep mirrored and flashy through a pretty even light gold toning. There’s not a lot of contrast between the devices and the fields; I seem to find that most 20th century proof Morgans are very light in contrast with few nice cameos pieces unlike earlier years of the series where there seems to find cameo specimens is easier.
I have posted two differently lit pairs of photos to try to best convey both the color and luster.
