Owner Comments:
While an NGC AU55 is not condition census for this date, Doug Winter calls it "very rare." This coin was my very first New Orleans gold coin, and a crusty, original example at that.
There are only 4 listed coins in uncirculated. Two I know of do not have attractive eye appeal. Many coins of this date have black spots or smudges. This is actually a hard to find this date with both originality, and the eye appeal that comes from attractive color and lack of black spots. This coin has a beautiful orange gold color, makes is atypical of the date. Most are a green gold color.
As the first Double Eagle issue of the New Orleans mint, it is a popular date. It is likely made from some of the first gold from the California gold rush.
