Beginning with this issue, the quality of New Orleans eagles drops considerably from that seen in the earlier portion of this decade.

Winter Variety Two (mintmark placed slightly lower than Variety One, and with a slightly better strike). This example is actually a bit better struck than usual with reasonably sharp centers and typical blunt radial lines in the stars. The fields show just a few light, scattered marks and they are covered with natural medium greenish-gold color.

This coin is from the Pinnacle Collection and is plated in Doug Winter's book on page 141.

The population figures for this date in Uncirculated are unquestionably inflated on account of resubmissions and the 1848-O is actually a very rare coin in AU58 and above.
