The 1881-O follows the 1883-O and the 1879-O in rarity in the rare 'with motto' series of eagles between 1879 and 1883. There are an estimated 27 to 33 known in AU and above, of which 4-5 are mint state.
This coin is the second finest known, as listed in Winter's census in his book (it is the Pinnacle Collection coin). As an MS61, it has nice luster that is occasionally broken by marks in the obverse fields It is not as clean as the MS62 1880 in the Louisiana Purchase. However, like the 1880-O, it is totally original. The first 1 and 8 show a bit of doubling to the right side.
Interesting, the date logotype for the 1881 is completely different than for the 1880: the numbers are thicker, shorter and fatter. The 1880 is more delicate in logotype.
