Item Description: $5 1997 W JACKIE ROBINSON
Full Grade: NGC MS 70

Owner Comments:

Two commemorative $5 gold coins were released in 1997. The first coin issued was to honor baseball great Jackie Robinson on the 50th anniversary of his start as the first black player in a major league baseball game. The obverse of the coin features a portrait image of the Hall of Famer, Jackie Robinson. The reverse shows a baseball with the inscription "1919-1972 Legacy of Courage."

There were only 5,174 uncirculated and 24,072 proof coins minted by the West Point Mint. The mint state version was produced in the lowest number of all commemoratives in the Modern Era at the time. These coins are very difficult to find in perfect MS70 condition (about 310 graded by NGC in MS70) and somewhat difficult to find in perfect PF70 condition (about 560 graded in PF70, or roughly one-half of those graded in PF69 condition).

1997-W auction purchase from Great Collections, 03/17/2024.

Gold started the year at $369/oz. and ended at $287.05/oz. (A drop of over 22%)
