Owner Comments:

Purchased at an October 2023 local coin show from a dealer I have known for many years, this 1853 Arrows Liberty Seated dime fills what is likely to be the last slot that I can fill in my 1792-1964 type set, the remaining eight slots representing coins that would likely be unaffordable for me in acceptable condition. It also happens to complete my Liberty Seated Dime type set. This coin is correctly graded at the Choice AU level, with a nice strike and nearly full luster, though likely "dipped". I find it to be more attractive than many MS 60-63 coins I have examined. I will keep the Extremely Fine example that fills the space for this issue in my album.

Like other 1853 silver coins with arrows at the date (and in the case of quarters and half dollars, rays around the eagle) this was the first issue at the new lower weight standard adopted to remedy the withdrawal from circulation and melting of older issues caused by the changed relationship between the values of gold and silver occasioned by the California Gold Rush, which greatly increased the supply of gold without a proportionate increase in the supply of silver.
