Owner Comments:

I obtained this proof Trade dollar at a March 2023 auction. It is the first addition to my proof type set in several years and my major acquisition for the year. The 1875 proof issue has a reported mintage of only 700 pieces, less than any of the 1878-83 proof only issues that receive more attention. The related circulation issue is considered to be the second scarcest circulation strike Trade dollar, the 1878-CC being scarcest.

This coin is attractive for its "Choice" grade, with reflective surfaces, contrasting frosted fields, and a nearly full strike. It has some blue and purple toning near the borders that can't be seen in the photos. Like the majority of proof 1875 Trade dollars, this one pairs the original "Type 1" obverse with the "Type 2" reverse introduced in 1875.
