Owner Comments:

This coin was my major purchase at a coin show in October 2022. It is a better date Seated dollar with a mintage of 20,000, or one fifth of the mintage of an 1893-S Morgan dollar, of which I saw quite a few more at this major show than I saw of 1844 Seated dollars, yet this Seated dollar cost much less!

All 1844 Seated dollars, except for proofs, show four stripes in the obverse shield instead of the normal three, the result of die doubling that caused some other shield elements to be doubled as well. This piece has just a bit too much wear on Liberty's knee, breast and head for an Extremely Fine grade, while the reverse on its own would likely qualify for that grade. The rims are unusually devoid of nicks or dings for such a large heavy coin that circulated. The surfaces are an original gray color with lighter shades on the high points. While there are some dark toning spots, especially on the reverse, I do not regard them as much of a distraction.
