10 GRADED HIGHER!

In 1961, the U.S. Mint sold 3,028,244 Proof Sets. But again there were major quality issues. Only 35 Proof Washington Quarters from that year have survived in Proof 69* condition. Finding high-grade Proofs from 1961 — that are also visually appealing — is difficult, not many have survived. This is one of the finest examples of a Brilliant Proof Washington Quarter from 1961 that exists. Only 10 specimens from that year have been grade higher than this coin.

NGC reserves the 'Star' designation for coins with superior eye appeal for their grade. PCGS does not use a * designation in their grading.
