The matte proof Lincoln is one of the rarest non-gold type coins of the 20th century. The first "VDB" proof type is the rarest and worth tens of thousands of dollars in almost any grade with only about 1400 produced. In 1916, only cent and nickel proofs were made. One example of a 1917 proof Lincoln is also reported to exist.
This beautiful red-brown example from it's inaugural year has rich luster for a matte proof. Finding these matte proofs with the red designation is not easy, and most of them have problems. This coin was the last non-gold coin to be added to my 20th century proof type collection after accepting that I would probably never own the much coveted VDB proof.
This is one of the top 7 1909 Lincoln Proofs graded by NGC: Pop BN 0/0, RB 2/2, RD 1/2
