Owner Comments:
During Van Buren's administration (1838-39), five civilized tribes: Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek and Seminoles are forced to leave their homeland and march West to government reservations in the Indian territory (now Oklahoma). On this journey more than a quarter of the Indian population died, hence the name the "Trail of Tears". As one observer wrote at the time that "such a denial of justice, and such deafness to screams for mercy, were never heard of in tome of peace...since the earth was made."
