Owner Comments:

I purchased this example of this much in demand type coin struck only in 1854 (in addition to the type 1 gold dollar), 1855, and 1856 (only in San Francisco and scarce) at auction in December 2021. This liberty head is unique to this type, whereas the head on the type 1 gold dollar resembles that on the twenty dollar gold piece and the head on the type 3 gold dollar is also used on the three dollar gold piece. (My framed gold type set contains an 1855 in Extremely Fine, though perhaps slightly impaired, purchased back in 1996.)

This coin features a rich gold color, no major abrasions, and is well detailed for this type, which is usually weak at the word "DOLLAR" and the date. In my opinion, though, the coin doesn't have sufficient luster to merit a grade higher than AU 50. Photos courtesy of Stacks Bowers Galleries.
