Owner Comments:
Philip V was the first of the Bourbon kings of Spain, appointed to the head of an empire weakened by war and heavily in debt. Much of the silver from the New World, like this coin, quickly went into the hands of Spain's creditors. The recently introduced milling process for producing round planchets was slow to reach full capacity so some of the 1733-1734 Mexico City issues used cob blanks and were struck on the screw press with dies that used a variation of the design of the cob coinage. This coin is an example of this type, "recortadas" in Spanish meaning trimmed, but also nicknamed "klippe", after the emergency issues during wartime when coins would be cut from strips, often in square or rectangular shapes.
