Item Description: 1/2C 1804 CROSS 4 NO STEMS C-12
Full Grade: PCGS VF 35 BN

Owner Comments:

Half cents are the only U.S. coins dated 1804 that are obtainable at a reasonable price. The "Red Book" lists five major varieties, four of which are combinations of obverses with crosslet or plain 4s paired with reverses with or without stems at the ends of the wreath. The fifth is the "spiked chin" variety, which is really a sub-variety of the crosslet 4 with stems variety struck from a damaged and worn die. I had owned uncertified specimens of the crosslet 4 with stems and plain 4 without stems varieties for some years before I acquired this specimen of the crosslet 4, no stems variety at a coin show in August 2021.

This coin has full Extremely Fine details, choice brown color, and a strong strike for this type. It appears to have been "net graded" down to VF 35 due to a number of small marks and old scratches, especially on the obverse.
