Owner Comments:
I finally obtained this proof only key to the Shield nickel set through the August 2021 ANA convention auction, which was conducted online. The reported mintage is only 900 pieces, although certified populations suggest that the actual mintage may have been somewhat more .
This specimen comes from a collection formed by Q. David Bowers and is quite attractive for the grade, with an absolutely full strike and light, somewhat iridescent toning. It has some light hairlines on the reverse that can't be seen in the flattering PCGS photos, which likely account for the relatively low grade for this issue. It is always preferable to examine coins in person before purchasing them whenever possible. If, as here, it isn't possible, it should be assumed that there are some defects that aren't visible in the photos, as I did here.
