Tenth coin of the series. James Earle Fraser was an American sculptor during the first half of the 20th century. He was an important member of the Commission of Fine Arts; the organization that selects the winning design from all submissions for all new coins to be minted. The American Buffalo is a 24-karat gold coin featuring James Fraser's designs based on the original 1913 Type I Buffalo nickel. The US Mint released the 2015 Buffalo Proof on April 9, 2015. The release day price was $1,590.00; the price of gold was $1,194.76. Total sales for the 2015 Gold Proof dropped again despite having the lowest first day price in five years. Is the excitement for this beautiful coin beginning to wane? Not for me! Along with many of you, I love this coin! Total sales for the 2015 Proof Buffalo only reached 16,591 coins sold, breaking the record low from 2013.
