Owner Comments:
I purchased this early half eagle back in November 2012. It is likely the only U.S. gold coin made before mid-1834 that I will ever own, as most of these coins were melted and all are rare today. Apparently long ago, someone engraved an "X" between the eagle's head and left facing wing. The cataloguer speculated that this was a "test mark" to show that the coin was solid gold. It may also have been so marked to identify the owner.
Notwithstanding the impairment, this coin is well detailed and original in appearance. Catalogued as "AU details", I believe it would grade Choice Extremely Fine or better without the impairment. Photos courtesy of Stacks Bowers Galleries.
