Owner Comments:
In 2020, a commemorative $5 coin was belatedly issued beyond its scheduled release date to honor the 60th anniversary of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. This coin, like the Baseball Hall of Fame commemorative, was struck in a unique domed or concave/convex shape. The obverse of the coin features three players reaching for a basketball -- one male, one female, and one in a wheelchair. The reverse is a cool, domed image of a basketball falling inside the rim of the bucket/net.
The design used on the $5 coin was also used on the clad half dollar and the silver dollar coin. I believe this is the fourth time in the Modern Commemorative era where a single design was used across all coin types. (First was the 2014 National Baseball Hall of Fame coins.)
There were a few design variations that make this commemorative series interesting to collectors: (1) an enhanced finish 2020-S half dollar was issued in a Kid's Set, (2) a colorized 2020-S proof half was issued (the first year a colorized coin was produced by the Mint), and (3) a colorized 2020-P silver proof dollar was issued.
