Owner Comments:

Ex, Dick Osburn Seated Liberty Half Collection. This is a very scarce coin with only about 300 survivors in all grades. Surprisingly, slightly more than one third of all survivors are Mint State coins. This can be explained by the fact that shortly after the beginning of the Civil War, all silver and gold coins ceased to circulate in most parts of the United States. Silver and gold coins were either hoarded, held in bank vaults to back paper bank notes or exported overseas to pay for needed imports. Many coins sent overseas ended up in the melting pot for their bullion content. Years later a few 1864 halves were discovered in bank vaults and saved, which accounts for the high percentage of uncirculated pieces we now enjoy..
