Coin Description:
The coin is essentially untoned and has shimmering luster over bright silvery surfaces. Some minor abrasions are scattered across Jefferson's portrait and a significant mark is found on the incomplete steps of Monticello which rate 5-3-3-4 by the quarter step method.
Comments:
The 1939 Doubled Die Reverse Variety 1 is often referred to simply as the Doubled MONTICELLO Jefferson Nickel. There is dramatic doubling on both the word MONTICELLO and FIVE CENTS which can be seen with the naked eye and this variety is undoubtedly the most popular of the entire series. In my opinion, no serious Jefferson Nickel collection can be complete without the addition of this coin. While scarce in mint state, a small number of uncirculated rolls were discovered in the late 1980's. Formerly FS-022, now FS-801, CONECA: 1-R-IV. The doubling is bold and clear whereas variety 2 is less pronounced. Both varieties only exist on the Reverse of 1940 dies. The windows and doors are all complete and there is only the slightest blending of the columns and roof.
