Minted at San Francisco without mintmark
Demand for the 2011 American Silver Eagle was especially strong. Sales of bullion strikes commenced early in January with more than 6 million sold in that month alone ! To meet the public demand for the silver coins, the US Mint utilized the San Francisco Mint to assist the West Point Mint with production. The Mint was also able to secure additional suppliers for the silver blanks used to make the coins.
Interestingly enough, in early 2013, the numismatic press reported that counterfeit 2011 American Silver Eagles had been noted in Canada containing no silver, but containing a trace amount of gold.
The 2011 bullion strikes bear no mintmarks to distinguish which were struck at West Point and which at San Francisco. However, NGC and PCGS differentiated between the two when a San Francisco "monster box" with the appropriate markings were submitted for grading.
2011 average silver price: $35.12/ounce
