The Standing Liberty Centennial Gold Coin is the second of three 24-karat gold coins the United States Mint issued in 2016 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of three iconic coin designs that were first issued in 1916.
Its obverse (heads) design depicts Liberty holding a shield and an olive branch as she steps through an opening in a wall bearing 13 stars.
Its reverse (tails) design depicts an eagle in flight flanked by 13 stars. Additional inscriptions to the originals include “AU,” “24K,” and “1/4 OZ.”
Both the obverse and reverse are by sculptor Hermon A. MacNeil.
Hermon Atkins MacNeil's 1916 winning design chosen by The Commission of Fine Arts kept Adolph Weinman from a clean sweep for the new coin designs of 1916. Hermon also was mentored by Augustus Saint Gaudens and knew Adolph well. Mr. MacNeil is best known for designing the Standing Liberty quarter, struck by the Mint from 1916-1930; and for sculpting Justice, the Guardian of Liberty on the east pediment of the United States Supreme Court building.
The US Mint released the Centennial Gold Quarter on September 8, 2016. The release day price was $485.00; the price of gold was $1,338.34. Enthusiasm for the new Gold Quarter helped boost sales to 91,752 coins sold as posted in the US Mint sales report dated March 5th, 2018.
