1993 Silver Panda 1oz FROSTED LARGE DATE MS69
Shanghai Mint
The 1993 panda coins were stuck in both proof and BU quality. The proof coin included a “P” mark on the panda side of the coin to denote the proof quality. The BU coin had 4 varieties – small and large dates frosted or not frosted. The small date was minted at the Shenyang mint and the large date at the Shanghai mint. The small and the large dates both utilized a “serif” style 1. This is also the first year that the proof coin panda design differed from the BU panda design.
Mintage was 120,000 BU and only 20,000 Proof
NGC did not recognize the “frosted” variety of the 1993 Panda coin until 2012. There are many pre-2012 NGC certified 1993 panda coins that have a label on them that does not say “frosted”; however, the coin is the “frosted” version. (If you are having a hard time seeing what the difference should look like, take a look at the 1992 large and small date panda coins – the large date is “frosted” and the small date is NOT “frosted”). The 1993 non-frosted large date version is the one that is the hardest to find.
