1938 was the beginning of production of the Jefferson Nickels which design continued for the remainder of the 20th century. This coin is a special matte finished piece minted in a limited production of just 25,000 coins as part of a special set. It was listed in the 1st edition of The 100 Greatest Modern Coins as #15.
