FROM THE BANK OF KOREA: The Bank of Korea issued ‘Commemorative Coins for the 70th Anniversary of Liberation’ in three types on August 3, 2015. Seeking to revive the true meaning of Liberation and commemorate it with the people.

OBVERSE: Center–Left is depicted the left hand side of a traditional Korean gateway whose doors are open. Center–Right is depicted a view through the gate revealing part of a roundel (Taegeuk) pattern, with two rays of light above (this is 1/3 of the overall 3 coin set design). Between the rays of light is inscribed 광복 70년 / 위대한 여정 재로운도역 (70th ANNIVERSARY OF LIBERATION / GREAT JOURNEY SETPPPING FORWARD). Around the rim at 8 o’clock is inscribed 2015/ 한국은행 / 삼만원 (2015 / Bank of Korea / 30,000 Won).

REVERSE: Center, logo and slogan for the 70th Anniversary of Liberation celebration. Inscribed at the top of the rim in a semicircle is ‘70th ANNIVERSARY OF LIBERATION, at the bottom of the rim in a semicircle is inscribed 2015 / THE BANK OF KOREA / 30000 WON.

NOTES: This coin is part of a three coin set that share an overall design, placed side-by-side the coins complete an image that depicts a traditional Korean gateway whose doors are open, (meant to express a new beginning toward the future and infinite potential). The two doors of the main gate open up to reveal a roundel (Taegeuk) pattern that twists and turns through the Korean Peninsula, with a depiction of the Sun dawning above it (emphasizing the significance of Liberation as the ‘the Regaining of Light’ and symbolizing the present hopes for the reunification of the Korean Peninsula and national prosperity).

The three coin set consists of the silver 30,000 won coin, a silver 50,000 won coin and a brass 10,000 won coin. The obverse of the three coins placed together reveals the overall design.

This coin commemorates the 70th anniversary of the surrender of Japanese forces on the Korean Peninsula at the end of WWII, August 15, 1945.
