Circulation strike mintage : 1,940,000

Despite its relatively high mintage, very few 1917-D reverse examples were to be found in the marketplace. This particular example is heavily worn. The outline of the focal areas of detail/design elements (Liberty's head, left hand, skirt on obverse; and Eagle's breast and left leg on reverse) are visible but without center detail. The protective rim has been worn away in many areas, and the high points are seen merging with the lower parts of the design. Note that on several areas of the obverse and reverse, most of the details blend together to the point of being partially merged with the surface. The date is weak but still legible except perhaps on the top of the date which is worn flat.

I consider this addition to my collection to be one of my novice mistakes although it taught me what a heavily worn coin looks like. Most of the coins in this year/mintmark are well struck and, in hindsight, I should have held out and cherrypicked a better example for my personal collection. I hope to find a better example of this year/mintmark in the future.
