Minted at Philadelphia without mintmark
I almost lost hope finding a 1990 American Silver Eagle without spots after examining dozens of examples. But I saw this beauty in a south Florida coin shop while visiting my parents and snatched it up. With an excellent sharp strike, satiny (almost gold-like) original mint luster on the obverse, and overall exceptional eye appeal, it was a find ! There is only a small contact mark on the obverse field which probably kept it from achieving MS-70 status. No hairlines on the surface of the coin, milk spots, scuff marks or other flaws (except that one minuscule contact mark) can be seen in the fields at 7x magnification.
Numismatic News: 1990 was also a pivotal year for the numismatic market. After the Wall Street investment bubble burst, easy to promote numismatic items, such as commemoratives, suffered the most during the ensuing bear market. However, scarce coins and popular collectors' series reportedly retained their core group of buyers and only suffered minimally.
The spot price of silver was down an average of 70 cents for the year but demand for the 1990 bullion strike increased 12% over the prior year, marking the third consecutive year of increased demand. Census numbers showed a majority of the certified population of 1990 American Silver Eagles graded MS-69 with coins designated "First Strike" elusive for this year.
The 1990 average silver price was $4.82/ounce
