From many countries, one strong everlasting hope. During the peak immigration years that lasted until 1924, seventy percent of all immigrants passed through Ellis Island, a total that amounted to 12 million people. As large as the Main Immigration Building is, it wasn’t big enough. It was built to accommodate a half million immigrants a year, but hundreds of thousands more passed through the doors.
