Lyman Allen #4.09 (KM #164) - Mintage: 1,220,000

The 1919S is the last 5 Centavos coin to be minted by the San Francisco mint until 1944. The mintage for this year is not terribly large and it must have circulated well because mint state specimens are difficult to obtain.

I had been looking for one of these for 12 years. I've been able to find a few that were either ungradable due to PVC damage or came back with a details grade due to hairlines. These coins are surprisingly rare in uncirculated grades despite their mintage. As of this revision, NGC has graded only 15 examples in all grades, with only 8 of those at MS60 or above. To put these numbers in perspective, NGC has graded exactly the same number of 1916-S 5 Centavos at MS60 or higher and 19 in total. Even the 1918- Mule has a total of 25 graded by NGC with 6 at MS60 or above. The 1919-S 5 Centavos should rank right up there as one of the true rarities of this collection. I feel very lucky that this one came along at a reasonable price. This date is a real sleeper and grossly undervalued.

Date acquired: 7/7/2018 (Already graded by NGC)
