Owner Comments:
The second commemorative dollar of 2005 celebrates the 230th anniversary of the United States Marine Corp. The obverse features the iconic image of a group of soldiers raising the American Flag at Iwo Jima. The reverse features an image of the USMC's emblem, an eagle on top of a globe, with an anchor behind.
There were 49,671 uncirculated and 548,810 proof coins (11 times as many!) produced by the Philadelphia Mint. The MS70 graded dollars are very plentiful and easy to find at an affordable price. The PF70 graded dollar is in fairly good supply as well. This was a very popular coin, and the U.S. Treasury Secretary authorized an increase of the coin's mintage by 20% to fulfill demand.
