Owner Comments:
'The 1851 is a curiously scarce issue and one that has received little attention from collectors. More than two million pieces were struck, the highest mintage figure of any double eagle produced until 1861. While it is generally considered a common date, it is not quite as common as often assumed. Probably no more than 70-80 pieces are known in all grades of Uncirculated, most of which are in the MS60-62 grade range.
1851 Double Eagle AU50 NGC. From a second-year mintage of more than 2 million pieces, the 1851 Type One Liberty double eagle is a relatively available date and a popular choice of type collectors. This lightly worn, lightly abraded AU example retains much original mint luster and eye appeal.
