1988 was the third year of production for proof Silver Eagles. Sales once again lagged, and dropped by nearly 350,000 from year two to three, and almost 900,000 when compared to the initial release in 1986.

Coin quality improved this year to about the same levels of their initial release in 1986. Approximately 5% of the 1988 proof Silver Eagles that NGC has graded have been awarded the grade of PF70UC.
