The second release of commemorative dollars in 2009 honors the 200th anniversary of the birth of Louis Braille. The obverse features a headshot of Louis Braille, the inventor of a system of reading and writing for the blind. The reverse features an image of a child reading a Braille book, and there is an inscription, in Braille, that reads “BRL” (for the word “Braille”).
There were 82,639 uncirculated and 135,235 proof coins produced by the Philadelphia Mint. The MS70 and PF70 graded dollars are plentiful and easy to find at an affordable price.
