During the year, South Africa adopted a new Coat of Arms and the SA Mint released two coin designs for the 1c - R1 circulation range. One with the Old Coat of Arms, and later the same year coins were issued with the new Coat of Arms.

The new design has a revised reverse with the same theme (two sparrows on a branch) and a revised obverse showing a re-engraved Coat of Arms of South Africa; the legend was bilingual (English and Afrikaans) from 1990 to 1995, then one language only - Zulu in 1996, Ndebele 1997 to 2001.

1c coins issued in 2000 circulated for 2 years until they were withdrawn from circulation.
