The 1982 issue commemorates the presidency of Balthazar Johannes Vorster (1915 - 1983) who served as the fourth State President of South Africa from 1978 to 1979.

1c coins issued in 1982 circulated for 8 years until they were replaced with an even smaller copper-plated steel version that was introduced in 1990.

Obverse
Instead of the Coat of Arms of South Africa, the obverse of the 1982 coins displays a portrait of Balthazar Johannes Vorster, South Africa's fourth president, facing three-quarters right.

Below the neck truncation, the initials of the obverse designer: LDL (for Lourens De Lange).

Around left and around right, the bilingual legend reads SUID-AFRIKA in Afrikaans and SOUTH AFRICA in English.

Around below, the date of issue * 1982 *.

Reverse
The reverse shows at its center two Cape sparrows (Passer melanurus) on a branch. Below the bird on the right, in small letters the initials of the designer T.S. (for Tommy Sasseen).

Above, the value and denomination 1c (one cent).
