N-9 Variety. Die break on the reverse from the "E" in STATES through the second "A" in AMERICA. This is one of the common 1817 varieties. Shortly after the close of the Civil War, a keg or approximately 14,000 uncirculated large cents was discovered hidden under a railway platform in Georgia. Dates of these coins ranged from 1816 to 1820. The majority of these coins were eventually purchased by John Randall for 90 cents on the dollar, and became known as the Randall Hoard. I can detect no actual wear on this coin and it is possible that this coin came from the Randall Hoard.
