Owner Comments:
The luster on this coin is beautiful with full luster bands. The strike is impeccable----it looks more like a proof than a business strike. Full thumb, skirt lines and head of Liberty on the obverse and the eagle's breast and trailing leg are bold on the reverse. The surfaces are creamy, smooth and clean with just some very tiny, wispy abrasions in the right facing field of the obverse. This coin is a super solid MS 66 and I'm so glad that I snatched it up! I waited a long time to fill this slot...
The typical example comes fairly well struck up but most MS pieces are incomplete and NOT full, in my experiences. Luster is usually bright and frosty. This issue usually comes moderately abraded and clear, clean surfaces are not the norm. This issue is rarely heavily toned. Most examples are white or lightly toned in a golden or pastel color.
Important varieties:
None in mint state.
This issue is #1 in mint state rarity and second in high grade mint state rarity (MS 65 or better) for the Philadelphia coins from 1934-1947 (The 1934 P is #1 in high grade MS with the 1935 P being a close third).
Mintage is at 4,110,000
