The 1872 CH M is a very interesting coin. There are several varieties of which this is the most common. About 90% of all strikes show a 20% clockwise rotation as seen in these photos. This variety shows broken die cracks on the Scale side and what appears to be a 2/? in the date, which I attribute as a 2/1. This variety also has a low 7 in the date. NGC did not slab this as a 2/1 so I will have to wait until a certified 2/1 appears. I have an uncertified example in my collection that has the rotation but does not show the 2/? or the die cracks. However, it has a high 7 in the date with evidence of a prepunched low 7.
