These coins commemorate the Great Sand Dunes National Park located in Colorado and are the 4th edition to the ATB series in 2014. Each coin weighs 5 troy ounces and is minted in .999 fine silver.
The Great Sand Dunes National Park is home to the tallest sand dunes in North America. Visitors enjoy going sand boarding, sand sledding and hiking on the sand dunes and the surrounding areas. Many people wishing to explore the park usually do so in the afternoon or early morning due to the extreme heat, which can reach up to 150 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer months.
The obverse side of the coin features a side profile image of George Washington just as he appears on the U.S. Quarter. Our country’s name “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” are inscribed above Washington with the face value of “QUARTER DOLLAR” inscribed below. To the left of him is the word “LIBERTY” and to his right, the phrase “IN GOD WE TRUST” is inscribed.
The reverse side of the coin showcases a scene taking place at the Great Sand Dunes National Park. In the scene a father and son appear to be playing in the sand on the shores of the Medano Creek located within the park. Off in the distance are the park’s sand dunes and mountains which overlook the creek. Above the scene are inscriptions for the park “GREAT SAND DUNES” with the minting year inscribed below “2014.” To the left are inscriptions for the state of Colorado and to the right the phrase “E PLURIBUS UNUM” is inscribed.
