2008W Elizabeth Monroe $10 Gold 1/2 Ounce; Mint State NGC MS-70. Elizabeth Kortright married James Monroe in 1768 at age 17. The family made their home in Virginia, but spent several years overseas while James Monroe served as U.S. Foreign Minister to Great Britain, France & Spain. Her time spent in European diplomatic circles influenced her sense of protocol and European formality to the White House. Their youngest daughter, Maria, was the first presidential child to be married in the White House.
The reverse design depicts furniture supplied by Elizabeth and James Monroe for the reopening of the White House following the burning at the hands of the British in 1814. This French Empire style furniture was considered appropriate for the Executive Mansion. Nine pieces remain in the White House today.
