Owner Comments:

O.102 R1. "Large Date, Large letters, Recut 3. Tied for Finest of the Variety. The O-102 variety is one of three Large Letters, Large Date die pairs for the issue, and the only one with such a prominently recut 3 in the date. Actually, all the date numerals are recut to one extent or another for the O-102 die pair. The current Premium Gem coin is tied for the top spot in the Condition Census for the variety according to Stephen Herrman's auction reference an Donald Parsley's fifth edition of the United States Early Half Dollar Die Varieties book. Rings of steel-blue and golden-rose toning are strongest at the margins, with lovely golden-rose shades covering the obverse center and brilliant silver luster covering the central reverse. Boldly struck everywhere except for three stars and the furthest right corner of the shield and adjacent wingtop. There are no significant marks or distractions," per cataloger. Heritage Auction on February 27, 2015, Lot 3110.
