Owner Comments:

O.111 R4+. Tied second finest? Lovely original surfaces, appears AU50 to my eye. Per David Lawrence Rare Coins cataloger, "Possible Finest Known O-111. A simply superb XF-AU example of this early half dollar. The 3-leaf overdate half is extremely rare in higher grades and PCGS has graded just 2 coins finer than this XF45 (AU50 and MS61). NGC hasn't graded anything finer than XF45. The surfaces of this coin scream AU all day long and we suspect that the flatness of hair on the obverse is due more to strike than wear. The reverse is clearly AU and exhibits the large diagnostic die crack from the rim at S in STATES to the middle of the eagle's chest. This is most likely the cause of the strike weakness on the obverse. We attribute this coin to O-111 although it is not noted on the holder. CAC approved for quality and eye appeal. This coin is part of the The Picky Collection." Obtained from Sheridan Downey by private treaty on July 14, 2013. Sheridan obtained the coin from the Auction of "The Picky Collection" by David Lawrence Rare Coins Internet Auction # 461, Lot 7015.
