The Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial site in Ohio was established to honor those who fought in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812 and to celebrate the long-lasting peace among Britain, Canada and the U.S.
The memorial, a Doric column rising 352 feet over Lake Erie, is situated five miles from the longest undefended border in the world. The memorial bears the name of Master Commandant Oliver Hazard Perry. Six naval officers (three American and three British) slain during the battle are buried under its rotunda. It was first established as a national site on March 3, 1919 (40 Stat. 1322).
The series features the 1932 portrait of George Washington by John Flanagan, restored to bring out subtle details and the beauty of the original model, on the obverse (heads). The reverse (tails) design depicts the statue of Master Commandant Oliver Hazard Perry with the Peace Memorial located in the distance. The memorial is one of the tallest of its kind in the U.S.
These striking numismatic collectibles are produced with an uncirculated finish and display a "P" mint mark for the United States Mint at Philadelphia, where they are struck. These coins are legal tender and have a nominal face value of 25 cents. Their fineness and weight are edge-incused on the coins. The coins are encapsulated, set in a protective outer box, and are accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity. These coins are produced in limited quantities.
In 2010, the United States Mint began to issue 56 quarter-dollar coins featuring designs depicting national parks and other national sites as part of the United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters® Program. 2013 marks the fourth year of the program and features the next 5 quarters.
