1903-O PCGS MS66DMPL VAM-9

This coin has an exciting history. The 1903-0 for over half a century was regarded as an ultra rarity, with only a few examples known extant in collectors' hands. Nearly the entire mintage of 4.5 million of these dollars was thought to have been melt under the Pittman Act of 1918. However, in the early 1960s, the Treasury vaults were opened revealing bags of this date in mint state condition.

With that said, 1903-O is still a very scarce coin in DMPL. At the top of the heap are this and the other two MS66 DMPLs certified by PCGS. NGC has not certified a 1903-O above MS65 DPL. It is a true rarity. Of the two PCGS sisters, one of them appeared in Heritage's 1999 ANA sale in Chicago as lot 7376 08/13/1999, where it sold for $10,065.50.

Imagine what this significance of this coin would have been prior to 1960.

Doubling here is also visible on the "9" and the first star to the left of the date. The VAM only notes doubling on the "1" and liberty's profile.
